The current locale is available in the gantt.locale object and can be modified directly, as in:

gantt.locale.labels.new_task = "New task";

Which is equal to:

gantt.i18n.setLocale({
    labels: {
        new_task: "New task"
    }
});

Both approaches are valid and supported. We recommend using the gantt.i18n object API.
